Digi Pack Design

In order to get ideas about what our Digi Pack could look like,we began looking at
Album covers of the same or similar genre to ours.

With these covers we really liked the abstract/ arty covers. we also liked the faded lettering
of the bottom right one.

In order to have a continuing theme through out our Digi pack, poster and music video
we felt that because we are using a bike in our promo it would be a good thing to include
in both of our promotional products.

Digi Pack Analysis

Digi Pack Analysis

The Bands Appearance

After researching into bands of a similar or the same genre of Echotape, we have decided to dress our band members I skinny jeans, slightly baggy plain t-shirts and casual footwear. We have decided to do this because we feel our band isn’t trying to be something completely different so we wouldn’t dress them in over the top garments. But on the other hand, they are still an indie rock band and we need to portray that in the way that they dress.

didgi pack analysis

his is the album cover for the Gorillaz – Demon Days. The first thing that catches your eye is the cartoon versions of the band members which stand out from the clear cut background. The cartoon characters are also included in some of these albums music videos which means people who have watched the video can instantly recognise the art work and know who the album is by. But on the other hand there is still text on the bottom and tom which connotes that the Gorillaz band identity is not yet strong enough to have no text at all.
The lead singer for the Gorillaz is Damon Albarn who is also the lead singer for blur. I feel that this album cover has links to blurs album ‘The Best Of’ because although the colour scheme is different there is a clear link between the cartoon representations of the band members.

The genre of the band, indie rock/ alternative hip hop/ electronica is very clearly shown by the cartoons colour scheme of the album cover. The colours used for the cartoon characters are fairly dark and sharp which shows that they have been made on the computer instead of being hand drawn. This again in comparison to Blurs album cover differentiates the two bands identities.
By having the band members look to the right, I feel it connotes that they are not concerned about what’s going on in front of them but are more focused on what they believe in. In comparison to the Blur album cover which connotes that they are a fun band that want you to buy there album, the Gorillaz seem like they don’t care whether or not you but there album because they made it for themselves.

Post Modernism

post modernism is taking the traditional and changing elements within it.

changing forms eg: oil painting to cartoon

They can be funny/playful and most often refer to the past or plays with reality

scepitcal or playfulk interpritations of cutrual work (art, buildings, muisc, etc) from the past

intertextuality

renivating what was before

mixing of styles and influences

stages of muisc

the experimental stage of genre attempts to establish trends...

the cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cutural understanding...

the post-modern looks at those trends, laughs at them, pokes them with a big stick and adds/ creats something new.

types of intertexuality

homage- imertation in the highest form of flattery.

pastiche- using the imagrey of one text to make a comment about another.

parody- taking the micky.

Genre

definition: Genre is the style seen throughout a media text

Genre is no longer a fixed set of elements

this point argues that the stereotypical elements have now become so mixed up that its hard to pin point just one genre to a music promo.

buckingham (1990) argues that genre is a constant process of negotiation and change.

genre will always be moving and will never stay still becuase of the ever chaging muisc world.

a hybrid genre is a mixer of two ot more genres, another reason why it is hard to pin point on genre to a music promo.

a repertoire of elements that an audiance expect to see in a media text of a specific genre. for example in a rock band music promo the audiance is expecting to see guitars classing about, fire and alot of perofrmance.

why is the concept of genre useful for an audiance to know before they watch a music promo?

it is importnat becuase for some videos, the audinace may need to know infomation about the band or the genre.
list of prier expectatons about what you are gong to get/full fills audiance expectations.
genres are fairly prodictable.
short hand means of communicating with the audiance, you know what to expect.
allows a quick set up becuase the audiance know what to expect but there still need to be something to avoid the cliche.

verisimilitude- how real/reaslistic a text is.

About The Band

Echotape are a band made up of four men, Marc Burford, Dan Bowman, Dan Morriss and Mike Burford. They have been a indie rock band since 2010 and are from Wallop, Hampshire.

They refer to themselves as being a "DIY band" and deliberatly avoid attention from major lables.
The drummer, Mike Burford explained "We realised we were going to have to do everything ourselves because we were not going to get straight away the major label backing and financial help

To follow on from the DIY ethic, the band produce their own videos to go along side their songs.
The music videos are on their website along with a link to their songs on itunes and their band murchandice. Tshirts and bags with the slogen 'BIG LOVE' writen across them.

conventions of a music promo

Camera work

  • Close ups are used often in many music promos to show the band playing their instruments and can also be used as a form as advertisement. For example showing guitar brands like fender promotes that brand.

  • There are also often audience reactions shots, these help to show that the band is popular amongst the age group shown and can also add to the narrative.

  • To make the viewer seem closer to the band there are also invisible audience shots and shots of the band performing into the camera. These both help to make the viewer feel like she/he is there watching them.

Editing

  • The editing is often of the era that the artist is trying to portray.

  • The editing will also cut to the beat of the music which links the song and promo together.

  • There is also a lot of use of the green screen, which helps to achieve some of the more usual music promos

Mise en scene

  • Instruments are used to add credibility and depth to the performance.

  • Locations often link in with the meaning or genre of the song, for example Red Hot Chilli Peppers music promo for Californiacation is based on a number of video games based in the city which is shown in the promo with the band member’s roaming round the city.

  • Stage performance and costume are also heavily linked to what the genre of the band is and what they believe in.

Narrative and performance

  • The performance side to music videos are usually shot in front of an artificial audience but are very realistic.

  • Intertextuality references are commonly used

  • The narrative is often fragmented and can be left for the audience to discover the true meaning behind the music promo

What is intertextuality?

John Stuart: modern media "incorporates, raids and reconstructs"

Julia Kriseva: "any text is the absorption and transformation of another"

The concept of borrowing from, modifing and recycling other media texts to create a new text is known as intertextuality.

An example of this is in Lady Gaga's music promo paparazzi which features newspaper articles and headlines which reference's the printed media

Narrative in music promos

classical narrative structure follows a particular structure

synaesthesia " a condition in which one type of simulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of colour. "

narrative in music promos

we automatically look for a beginning, middle and an end in a narrative, however in a song it can sometimes not run to how we think it will. In songs the narrative rarely is completed and is fragmented

Andrew Goodwin suggests that music promos can interpret/ use the meanings created in the some lyric in one of the following ways:

illustration:  the promo illiterates the idea/ narrative in the song lyrics, which means that it follows the same idea that the song is portraying.

amplification: uses a key idea/ image from h lyrics and develops into a concept within the promo. a link remains between the lyric and the promo

disjuncture; the promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning, abstract, often seen as unconventional, arty videos, creates a  new range of meanings for the song.

Stacy's mom essay

At the beginning of this music promo there are a series of slow pans to show Stacy’s mum pulling up in her car. The common use of slow pans is to show the audience that the object or person in shot is desired/ lusted after. These emotions are clearly shown by the boys that Stacy is with by the expressions on their faces. There is also the use of a two shot showing Stacy handing the boy a drink and behind her is her mum getting undressed. This two shot represents that Stacy is getting between the boy and her mum but she still needs to be there because otherwise the boy would have no way of getting to his fantasy.

The cuts between the pan shots in the beginning of the music promo are to the beat of the music. This helps to make the music promo relate back to the band rather than cut to them playing the song, a common convention in music promos. To further relate back to the band and the song they are shown playing several instruments on posters above the Stacy’s bed. This is a good use of editing because it shows that the band is fashionable and cool but also fits in with the pop art theme of the music promo.

The performance part of this music promo is very conventional. It switches between clips of the band playing but unlike other music videos where the bands are usually seen playing in an abandoned building or blacked out room, the performance element of this music promo links to the narrative and does not tend to go off to performance often.

Red is a colour that connotes lust and desire. This is why has been used during this music promo. Stacy’s mum is often shown wearing red whether it be her clothes or the colour of her lip stick, this suggests to the audience that she is desired by the boy in comparison to Stacy who is rarely seen in red and is not lusted after by the boy.
